Orion Observatory (LLC) is a cooperative effort remotely operated observatory being built in New Mexico near Mayhill in the Sacramento Mountains. Remotely operated means that the individual astronomers will be able to operate their telescopes and cameras from anywhere in the world with a broadband internet connection. The pricipals are Keith Allred and Jay Potts of Seattle, Peter Finnoff of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Bill McLaughlin from Central Oregon. ORION consists of a small dwelling and four remote observatories, three of which (all but Jay's) are now under construction. The observatories are built using a "tower" design which elevates the telescopes about 23 feet above the ground. This eliminates much of the air turbulence present close to the ground which allows for clearer pictures of astronomical objects. The project includes custom designed all steel stuctures (for fire and lightning resistance and better cooling) and the use on many industrial "off the shelf" components to reduce cost and complexity. ORION stands for Optical Remote Imaging Observatory of New Mexico. We expect "first light" (beginning to use the observatories) in late 2008. Construction can be seen on our Construction Page.
